Rossi wasn't able to close enough on Newgarden to make a proper passing attempt, but was pleased with his first podium finish in IndyCar that wasn't, well, that one at Indianapolis last May.
"There is no reason to question my preparations", Hamilton said. "I'll leave it to you".
The session began in cool conditions with rain intensifying. Unchallenged through the race, Hamilton scored his fourth win of the season and fifth victory at home in Silverstone. "I would suspect that the floor had a bit of damage after the off; it was a bit bumpy".
"There's 143,000 people employed in the British motorsports industry in the UK alone and 80% of that is exported". F1 chairman Chase Carey and Sean Bratches, the sport's new commercial boss, were given their first taste of the famous race this year, and it is unlikely that the passionate display by 350,000 spectators in attendance over the weekend will have gone unnoticed.
A team spokesperson confirmed the likely sanction late Friday after a dominant Bottas had excelled during practice at Silverstone. McLaren's relationship with Honda remains at breaking point, but the alternative options for the British team are uncertain.
In Austria that proved problematic for Hamilton.
"We still need to build upon it, but it's a great foundation moving forward".
Another race, and another DNF for Fernando Alonso.
Further back, Vettel put pressure on Verstappen, attacking down the inside of Stowe, only for the Red Bull to hold on around the outside. His slow lap back to the pits meant he would drop behind both Red Bulls and the Renault of Nico Hulkenberg.
He was then 9.5 seconds behind Hamilton, with some clear air ahead of him, but no immediate prospect of catching the Vettel/Verstappen battle.
"It is almost a no-brainer", he told reporters at Silverstone. Vettel tried, Verstappen parried. I was racing against Jenson once, and I happened to win the race and got a lot of cheers, so it was nice the people appreciated we had a good race at the time. He ran seven laps in second place, gradually falling away, before pitting on lap 32. This is because their medium long run choice somewhat suggests their strategy will be a definitive one-stop, starting on the softs and changing to the mediums.
"There are not many times in your life you have this kind of opportunity", the Ferrari driver said.
Vettel eventually came home in seventh as Hamilton trimmed the German's advantage at the top to just a single point. For sure the last few circuits hasn't been ideal for us.
Silverstone occupies a special place in the affections of F1 fans and drivers alike.
