Hamilton takes pole for record 69th time

It was a second consecutive success for Hamilton and a fourth in five races for Mercedes, but the three-time champion believes the pendulum could swing back in Ferrari's favour in Singapore on 17 September.

After a number of rain delays, Lewis Hamilton powered through to his 69th career pole position, breaking Michael Schumacher's record in the process.

Hamilton has spoken of his desire to race for Ferrari in the past, but he will seemingly have to wait before he gets the chance to don the famous red overalls after Vettel committed his long-term future to the Italian team.

Hamilton finished nearly five seconds ahead of Mercedes teammate Valtteri Bottas while Vettel came third in his Ferrari, more than half a minute behind. I love it here.

"Two of my favourite races this year have been starting from the back - Silverstone and then this one."

"Clearly we have not a bad car on the straights". We are getting a good price for this bet as Lewis Hamilton is the favorite so I think this bet makes a lot of sense.

But the Spaniard, who triumphed at Monza back in 2010, is also due to start Sunday's race from the back of the field after McLaren's beleaguered partners Honda confirmed he will serve a 35-place drop following further engine penalties.

"For me it's really inspiring to see that they're so involved and so keen for us to be the best, because that gives me confidence that it can continue for many years to come".

Vettel took third place, having quickly fought his way up from sixth on the grid, but he never looked like catching the Mercedes pair, finishing a distant 36 seconds behind Hamilton. I think we underestimated the circuit.

"It's an empowering feeling for sure", Hamilton said when asked how it felt to be leading the championship. "And there is also the extra element of racing and I am a fan of that so we see what we can do". The British driver was met with a mix of cheers and boos during Monza's famed celebration with the podium suspended over the track. Saturdays, they are very strong.

Special mention goes to Red Bull's Daniel Ricciardo for taking the DHL Fastest Lap Award in the race.
