Disney closing in on Fox takeover deal

"Disney and Twenty-First Century Fox are closing in on a deal, and it could come as soon as next week, according to sources familiar with the matter", reports CNBC.

Murdoch did add that the company is always working to "create the most value for shareholders".

The talks of a Fox sale begin in November when Disney reportedly reached out to Fox to open negotiations. Disney doesn't sell TV services directly to consumers in the USA chief executive officer Robert Iger has had success acquiring movie studios such as Pixar Animation and Lucasfilm and a Fox deal could give Disney a controlling stake in the Hulu video-streaming service. The Mouse House would not get Fox's broadcast network, Fox Sports or Fox News.

Earlier this month it was revealed that The Walt Disney Company had held talks with 21st Century Fox about acquiring a number of its assets, including its movie studio division 20th Century Fox, TV channels FX and National Geographic, Fox's TV production assets, and its stake in worldwide broadcasters such as Sky and Star.

Reuters reported in November that Comcast, the largest US cable provider, had expressed interest in Fox assets.

Reuters had reported last month that apart from Disney, both Comcast and Verizon Communications Inc had also expressed interest in acquiring a significant part of Fox's assets.

Disney joins companies including Comcast looking to buy a piece of the Murdoch family's empire.
